Sportivate

County Sports Parnerships have started planning their delivery of the Sportivate Programme.  Part of Sport Englands PLACES PEOPLE PLAY 2012 Legacy Programme, Sportivate will give participants aged between 14 and 25 the chance to receive six to eight weeks of coaching in a sport of their choice. The programme will be delivered through the network of 49 CSPs working with a range of local partners.

The programme is aimed at those who are not currently choosing to participate in sport in their own time, or are doing so for a very limited amount of time – and will support them to continue playing sport in their community after the six weeks is up. During the six weeks a participant may work towards an event or personal challenge.

Sportivate will be fully inclusive and target participants across this group, including young people who have a disability, both males and females and participants from BME groups.

Budget
Sportivate will run from April 2011 until March 2015. Over this period, Sport England will invest £32 million of National Lottery funding into the programme (£8 million per annum).

Outcomes
Sportivate will ensure that up to 300,000 participants in the 14-25 age range complete coaching courses over the four years, with at least two in five of them (120,000 participants) continuing to play sport regularly. Other outcomes will be:

The provision of a supply chain of sporting activities that will match as well as generate demand;

  • To get more 14-25 year-olds regularly participating in sports activities in the community by responding to their needs and working closely with a range of relevant providers to provide a framework of activities
  • A focus on high quality sports providers all operating within robust Safeguarding Standards
  • The creation of more opportunities for the growth and deployment of coaches and volunteers
  • Increased take up in leisure centres and other facility stock
  • Close links with clubs to drive more participants to take part and volunteer in NGB community sports clubs.

Sportivate will also contribute to wider agenda outcomes including impacting upon underrepresented groups, breaking down social and cultural barriers, attracting a range of additional funding/advocacy partners, tackling obesity and providing settings for skills development in education and community life (both through participating and volunteering).

Key partners include:

  • NGBs
  • Schools
  • Colleges
  • Higher education institutions
  • CSP coaching lead
  • Local
  • Authority sports development teams
  • Other local government partners
  • Other national and county/sub-regional partners.

Sporting Champions
Sporting Champions is a Sport England initiative bringing world-class athletes face-to-face with young people to inspire and motivate them. Over 80 current and retired elite athletes have been recruited based on their ability to work with young people with the aspiration of raising participation in sport.

The scheme is aligned to Sportivate in 2012, offering all county sports partnerships (CSPs) the ability to tap into a variety of packaged visits designed to support both programmes’ delivery by increasing the likelihood of growing the participation base, retaining the young people in Sportivate sessions and successfully moving them into sustainable club sport.
What do the champions do?
The champions’ involvement with Sportivate is based on their individual skills and the needs of the local area. They attend as many sessions as requested by activity deliverers, engaging with the young people and inspiring them to continue taking part in sport.
Their involvement could be as simple as delivering motivational speeches, leading the session warm-up, or tackling more complex issues such as working with the people organising the activity, or parents to understand and overcome the barriers to participation.
CSPs may also use their champions to work with local communities or schools to raise levels of interest in the Sportivate programmes, or in the club settings after the 6-8 week programme is complete to encourage young people to keep taking part in sport.
Please contact your local County Sports Partnership to find out how to secure a Sporting Champion to support your Sportivate delivery. Or apply here .
