County Sport Partnerships are committed to help increase the number of women and girls who participate in sport or physical activity on a regular basis.
Figures published by Sport England in December 2010 revealed the size of the gender gap in sport. At present, one in eight (2.761 million) women regularly play sport in England. Whilst this has increased significantly in the past five years, it still trails behind men’s participation, with one in five (4.176 million) taking part. Women from disadvantaged communities play even less sport, with less than one in 10 women taking part.
A number of CSPs have been involved in different projects to help promote and develop opportunities for women and girls.
Doorstep sport to create 30,000 active women
The CSP PRO-ACTIVE West London have been identified as a key delivery partner in a new national project that will get 30,000 women playing ‘doorstep sport’.
PRO ACTIVE South London LOVE2 Womens and Girls Sports and Activity Festival
PRO ACTIVE South London facilitated the festival based around three themes:
- 'Have a go' - aimed at women and girls who currently do not participate in any sport or physical activity
- 'Something Different' -aimed at those currently involved but would like to try something different
- 'Play Again' -aimed at people who had previously taken part, to get them participating again
Funding was offered to deliverers of sport to hold an event aimed at women and girls during LOVE2 week. These were all linked to local, regular activities promoted to participants during the festival
